I sit and I write.
Sounds very simple.
And yet, if you’re a writer, you understand that sometimes it’s simple and other times, well…
But if you’ve ever read any of the great writing books like The Artist’s Way or Writing Down the Bones, you’ve probably heard that discipline is a mainstay if you want to truly be a Writer.
Sitting down to face the blank page can be a daunting task. There is just you and the page and your thoughts.
Other times, the words just pour out of you as if you were simply a vessel that has been filled to the brim from an unknown source. Filled to overflowing with words and they simply spill out and onto the page.
Pure heaven. Bliss!
And all the other days when that magic doesn’t come pouring out of you? Well, what then?
Sit and face that blank page like adversaries?
Maybe do some stream-of-consciousness journaling, penning whatever comes to mind, without trying to make sense or logic out of it. Without censoring or filtering…
Yes! No more blank, pristine page.
But does it count? Does it count if the words simply don’t – make – sense ??
Of course it counts. All words count.
All words matter.
They are windows into your mind.
And if your mind is all clogged up and it feels like nothing can get through no matter how hard you try to turn on the tap…well surely any random words that come dribbling out count! They are evidence that words exist inside of you, waiting to spill forth.
There is hope! (There is ALWAYS hope, dear one.)
And whether it’s words or music or art or ideas that must spill out of you, the best way to turn on that tap and let them out is to align with and listen to your soul.
What is your soul whispering to you?
What simply needs to be said? (Even if it doesn’t make sense.)
Even if it feels messy and chaotic and raw and ridiculous.
Especially in those times…
You don’t always have to make sense out of the madness.
You simply have to let the madness be the madness.
Sense, if there is any of significance to be had, will come in time.
Listen to your soul.
What is she saying, urging, hinting?
Maybe you feel like your soul isn’t saying a damn thing. Nothing but radio silence.
Maybe you don’t believe you have a soul, or at least, not one that speaks to you.
Oh, but you couldn’t be farther away from the truth, Beautiful!
Your soul has been with you since before your time here began.
Your soul is always with you and ready to guide all of your creative endeavors.
In fact, your very best ideas, dreams, work all come from your soul.
When you’re tapped into and in alignment with your soul, you feel alive, expansive, and deliciously creative.
So how do you know what your soul is saying to you right now?
Well, first of all, ask a question.
Ask and listen.
You might not necessarily hear voices in your head. Most likely it’s going to be more of a feeling.
Ask your question…
What should I write today?
Don’t get an answer?
Start making one up.
Ask, “Should I write about beeswax?” (or social injustice or cold pressed juices or junk yards or demons…you get the idea. Whatever you might normally write about or might think was just something cool.)
And notice how you feel.
Expansive or contracted?
Not sure what those things feel like?
Right now, out loud or silently depending on where you are perhaps, say, “Yes!”
Notice how that feels in your body.
Now say, “No!”
Notice how that feels in your body.
Yes! typically feels open, bright, expansive – like you’re getting taller or expanding.
No! typically feels tight, closed off, contracted or constricted – like you’re all balled up into a fist.
Ask, “Should I write/compose/dream about beeswax?”
Expansive or contracted?
Neither?
Say, “Today I will write about beeswax.”
Expansive or contracted?
Neither?
Keep saying that statement and substitute in various topics or ideas. Keep going until you find one that makes you feel expanded…
And then write/compose/sing/meditate on that!
Do this daily.
And get in the habit of asking for soul guidance. Or if that sounds way too airy fairy, then get in the habit of noticing how different things feel in your body.
Does the thought of eating fast food again make you feel expanded or contracted?
Does burning the midnight oil yet again feel expanded or contracted?
Play with it.
Notice the answers.
Have the courage to follow them.
Let me know how it goes!
Remember, you’re such a weirdo. And I love that about you!
Hugs
Kim
